Full-time lecturers have voting rights in the department and are supervised by both the Associate Department Head for General Math Education and the Department Head. There is a well-defined promotion ladder from Lecturer (up to 3-year appointment) to Senior Lecturer (3-year appointment) to Distinguished Lecturer (5-year appointment). Lecturers also can teach in summer and receive highest priority for those additional teaching opportunities. Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Distinguished Lecturers in the Mathematics Department at the University of Tennessee are an integral part of the educational mission of the university. Lecturers of all ranks contribute to the pedagogically innovative teaching/learning and hold a variety of service roles in the Department, College, and Campus including serving on the University Faculty Senate. Several Senior and Distinguished Lecturers engage in the professional development of graduate teaching assistants as part of the departmental GTA Teaching Advising Program. Others network with Math Instructors from other institutions through the MAA CoMInDS project. Outstanding lecturers with a PhD in mathematics may have the opportunity to teach and mentor students as part of the department’s unique online Master of Mathematics (MM) program aimed at working high school teachers.
