Position Description:    

We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as a Postdoctoral Fellow of The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences (SMSS) beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.

The SMSS is part of the College of Sciences at UTRGV. With over 182 faculty and 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, the College of Sciences takes pride in preparing students for diverse careers. SMSS faculty have active research programs in statistics, pure and applied mathematics, and mathematics education with over 45 tenure-track and tenured faculty. The school offers multiple graduate and undergraduate degrees in statistics and mathematics, including a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborations with colleagues in several colleges and departments across the university. These include the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, College of Health Professions, College of Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. SMSS faculty closely collaborate with researchers from the South Texas Institute of Diabetes and Obesity, Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance, and the University of Texas School of Public Health.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have Ph.D. within last six years in Mathematics, Applied/Computational Mathematics, Statistics, or related fields from an accredited university, with at least 18 graduate hours in a mathematics content area. Ph.D. candidates will be considered, but the degree should be awarded no later than the proposed starting date.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications: • Strong mathematical modelling and analysis/simulation skills as evidenced by publications • Knowledge of one or more programming languages • Experience teaching undergraduate students in mathematics or related fields

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced knowledge of both the C++ and Python programming languages • Working knowledge of ordinary/partial differential equations, analysis, and probability • Published articles or preprints in Mathematical Biology/Ecology/Epidemiology/Neuroscience • Prior research mentoring experience • Prior interdisciplinary work
