 The faculty of the Department of Mathematics at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a full-time, professional-track position at the rank of Instructor to begin August 16, 2026.  The position is an 11-month appointment with a teaching load of 8 courses for the academic year. It is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon satisfactory performance, departmental needs, availability of funds, and approval of the Dean of the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences.

 Candidates must have a minimum of a master's degree in mathematics or mathematics education and must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will teach coordinated undergraduate courses including, but not limited to, college algebra, finite and discrete mathematics, precalculus, applied calculus, calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra.  Evaluation of the candidate's teaching will be based on peer observations, student feedback, and the candidate's demonstrated investment in the curriculum.

 To fulfill the conditions for an 11-month appointment, the candidate will be expected to take on service roles related to the department’s teaching of introductory courses.  As the university's enrollment grows, and enrollment in introductory math classes grows with it, the math department recognizes a need to strengthen coordination of its service courses.  Therefore, preference will be given to candidates with interest and experience in the improvement of curricular materials, oversight of coordinated courses (e.g., in the role of Director of Coordinators), and collection and analysis of data (e.g., related to curricular changes to coordinated courses).  The department may grant an appropriate reduction in teaching load to candidates who combine one of these roles with other synergistic service roles including, but not limited to, coordinating a course with many sections, overseeing the department's on-site Math Learning Center, and organizing the department's annual high school math contest.

 The University of South Carolina is located in the heart of downtown Columbia, South Carolina, the state capital, and serves approximately 33,000 undergraduate students and 7,000 graduate students.  The math department is currently working on creating new promotional pathways for professional-track faculty, as required by a recent faculty senate resolution. The department  (http://www.math.sc.edu/) currently has 32 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 14 professional-track faculty, 57 graduate students, 112 majors, and 54 minors. The department has an on-site tutoring center, coordinated introductory courses, and undergraduate supplemental instruction for introductory courses.  It also has a vibrant undergraduate math club, and it plays host to an annual high-school mathematics competition that draws students from across the state.
