JOB POSTING – POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW
Area of Research: undergraduate mathematics teaching, pedagogy, and curricular development.
Description of duties:
The Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Arts & Science is seeking to hire a highly motivated postdoctoral teaching fellow to develop and support curricular and pedagogic initiatives in first and second-year math courses. The position includes teaching undergraduate mathematics, developing administrative skills necessary for running large courses, and applying pedagogical innovations to enhance learning in introductory-level courses, much of which takes place in very large courses split into multiple coordinated sections of about 200 students each. This is an opportunity for mathematicians interested in a teaching career to further develop their teaching skills and to contribute to pedagogical initiatives that enhance the learning experience of undergraduate students. As a member of the department, you will be supported by a faculty mentor and join our 12+ teaching faculty.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team that includes mathematics faculty and teaching assistants (TAs). Depending on the candidate’s interests, they will be provided with opportunities to conduct research on pedagogical techniques, to assess the effectiveness of new teaching practices, to develop instructor and TA training resources, and to support the teaching of first- and second-year math courses. The successful candidate will be assigned the equivalent of 4 semester-long courses per year.
Candidates will be encouraged to collaborate on one of our Educational Initiatives, a list of which is found at https://www.mathematics.utoronto.ca/jobs/postdoctoral-fellow-positions/teaching-postdoctoral-fellow-positions.
Salary:
Total compensation will be at least $67,000 in the first year of the appointment. This has two components: a teaching stipend, and a postdoctoral salary. The postdoctoral position is considered to be a 60% appointment with a minimum full-time salary of $50,000.
Please note that should the minimum rates stipulated in the collective agreement be higher than rates stated in this posting, the minimum rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Required qualifications:
Candidates must have completed all requirements for a PhD in mathematics, or a related field, before the start date of the position, and they must have experience teaching mathematics to undergraduates. We will value demonstrated experience in some of the following: course and curriculum development, pedagogical development activities, supervision of TAs, or contributions in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Strong written and oral English communication skills are required, as are the ability to proactively set, prioritize, and accomplish goals. Experience working in teams is strongly desired.
Application instructions:
All individuals interested in this position must submit:
• Cover letter
• Curriculum Vitae
• Teaching statement
• Teaching Dossier
• Three or more reference letters (to be submitted online by the reference writers on this site).
We prefer candidates to include three reference letters at time of application (to be submitted to https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/list/27539 by the reviewers themselves).. The cover letter should describe your teaching experience, contributions in pedagogical development, pedagogical scholarship (e.g., interests, presentations, publications), along with long-term career goals, and their fit with the focus of this call.
Applicants should submit their materials on MathJobs. To be guaranteed full consideration, applications should be received by December 15, 2025 though we will consider late applications.
Closing date: Applications may be reviewed as long as positions remain available.
