Director of Introductory Mathematics
Position: The Director of Introductory Mathematics is a twelve-month, non-tenure-track, 4-year term
faculty position in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics beginning July 1, 2022. After
the completion of the 4-year term, the faculty member will have the opportunity to renew in the position or
transition to a 9-month, non-tenure-track faculty position. Position Responsibilities: Responsibilities include overseeing the coordination of 100 level courses
(Intro to Contemporary Math, College Algebra, Precalculus) and Calculus I; overseeing and organizing
the recruiting, training and scheduling of undergraduate teaching assistants; and math help center
student workers; assisting the Associate Chair in course teaching assignments for faculty and graduate
teaching assistants; and serving as an intermediary between the department and other VCU academic
units and committees not limited to but including the General Education Curriculum Committee and
University Academic Advising. Additional administrative duties include mentoring and coordinating all
summer introductory level courses; overseeing the planning and implementing professional development
for all introductory level course instructors; and supporting the goals of the department as needed. The
standard teaching load of non-tenure-track faculty is four courses per semester. The Director of
Introductory Mathematics will have a reduced teaching load of two mathematics courses per semester.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree or higher in Mathematical Sciences or related field.
Significant experience in Mathematics Education such as graduate level credit hours, curriculum
development, professional development, pedagogical training, etc. Experience teaching and coordinating
introductory level mathematics courses with large enrollment. A successful candidate must have
demonstrated the ability and appreciation of working with diverse faculty, staff, and students, and the
commitment to fostering diversity as a faculty member at VCU. Preferred Qualifications: Graduate degree in Mathematics Education The Department: The Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics contains 27 tenure-track
and 20 non-tenure-track faculty, teaching over 30,000 student credit hours per year. The Department is a
