Program Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Wake Forest University invites applications for the open position of Associate Professor of Statistics and Graduate Program Director for our M.S. Statistics program. This appointment will be within the newly approved Department of Statistical Sciences, which inaugurates on July 1, 2022.

We seek candidates with a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research, a desire to mentor both undergraduate and graduate students, and a commitment to enhance the breadth, depth, and diversity of our statistics programs. We strive for inclusivity and seek applicants with demonstrated success or interest in working with diverse populations. The position is open to candidates across all areas of statistics. A Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics or a related area is required. The teaching load is two courses per semester (or equivalent). The Graduate Program Director is expected to teach a graduate colloquium course which will count towards this teaching load as a half course per year.

The M.S. in Statistics program is expected to begin on July 1, 2022, after completing its transition from a track within the current M.S. in Mathematics and Statistics. Presently, the two-year program graduates six to ten statistics Master’s students per year, most of whom have assistantships. The program provides close personal attention and opportunities for mentored research. We are particularly interested in candidates who seek to maximize the value of a smaller, personalized Master’s degree program. The expectation is that the successful candidate for this position will lead the Master’s program for several consecutive years and continue as a faculty member in the department thereafter.

The department has nine permanent faculty members in statistics, and is hiring three more this year (this position, as well as two new positions at the Assistant Professor level). Research interests of existing faculty include the areas of actuarial science, applied probability, Bayesian methods, biostatistics, causal inference, data science, environmental statistics, functional data analysis, machine learning, networks, neural networks, record linkage, sequential analysis, spatio-temporal models, and statistical education. Statistics programs within the department include both a B.A. and a B.S. in Mathematical Statistics, a B.S. in Mathematical Business, and an M.S. with a track in Mathematical Statistics. More information can be found at http://college.wfu.edu/math/.

A complete application will include a detailed letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a graduate transcript, a research statement, and a teaching statement that includes evidence of teaching excellence. The letter of application should clearly describe why the teaching and research environment at Wake Forest University is a good fit for the candidate’s professional goals, why the candidate is interested in leading a small, personalized Master’s program, and why the candidate would be an effective leader within a new Department of Statistical Sciences. Candidates who advance beyond the initial round will be asked to arrange for at least three confidential letters of recommendation which should address the scholarship, teaching, and leadership qualities of the candidate.

The initial review of applications will begin on November 15; however, applications will continue to be accepted and reviewed until the position is filled. Any questions or concerns about the position should be addressed to search committee chair Rob Erhardt (erhardrj@wfu.edu). Wake Forest University is an AA/EO employer and values an inclusive and diverse learning community and campus climate.
