The College of Wooster, Department of Mathematical & Computational Sciences

674 0The Department of Mathematical & Computational Sciences (MCS) offers majors in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistical & Data Sciences, graduating 65-75 seniors each year across the three fields. The department is vibrant, collaborative, and committed to excellence in both teaching and research, often in projects that include undergraduates. We place a strong emphasis on experiential learning, with every student completing a year-long Senior Independent Study (I.S.) project, and many participating in our unique Applied Methods & Research Experience summer consulting program. MCS attracts a particularly diverse group of students, with our majors almost equally split between domestic and international students.

A distinctive educational approach makes Wooster the nation’s premier liberal arts college for mentored undergraduate research. Every year since 2002 U.S. News & World Report has asked college presidents and deans to name schools with outstanding undergraduate research opportunities and senior capstone programs, only two schools have made both lists every year: Wooster and Princeton. Through these signature opportunities, every Wooster student develops abilities valued by employers and graduate schools alike: independent judgment, analytical ability, creativity, project management, time management, and strong written and oral communication skills. Founded in 1866, the college enrolls approximately 1,700 undergraduate students.
