The Institute for Defense Analyses, Center for Communications Research, Princeton (IDA CCRP) invites applications for the IDA Postdoctoral Fellowship, to be followed by an appointment as a research staff member. The IDA Postdoctoral Fellowship program has been established with the purpose of providing funding for fellows from historically underrepresented backgrounds who wish to pursue careers in research supporting national security. We seek to recruit and support highly qualified scientists with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives arising from differences including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, country of origin, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, and socioeconomic status. As part of their application, applicants should submit a short personal statement describing how their diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives contribute to their academic and professional pursuits. About the postdoctoral position The role begins as an IDA Postdoctoral Fellowship, where the applicant will perform research as a visiting scholar at a university and continue their academic research program, while receiving salary and benefits from IDA. This appointment is designed to last one year, with a possibility of a second year term, in order to give the applicant time to obtain a security clearance, which is required in order to become a member of the research staff. Upon obtaining the required security clearance and completion of the IDA Postdoctoral Fellowship, the selected applicant will join the IDA CCRP research staff. The start date for this position is flexible, but we anticipate that the successful applicant will begin work in the postdoctoral role by Fall 2022. About CCR Princeton The Center for Communications Research, Princeton (CCRP) does research in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering and related fields in support of national security. We are part of the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), a non-profit federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), but our research environment feels like that of a mathematics department at a leading university. However, there is no formal teaching and very few administrative duties. We work on a wide variety of difficult problems in mathematics, computer science and statistics whose solutions impact national security. Rather than recruiting in specific areas of those fields mentioned above, we are looking for creative PhDs who are willing and able to learn and contribute to the vast specialized body of knowledge developed to solve our ever-evolving research problems. Some projects require very deep and sophisticated mathematics, others the latest computational technologies, and many require both. It is our custom to work in a highly collaborative, shared-credit environment that focuses on bringing in new voices and ideas, as our problems tend to be interdisciplinary. We foster a collaborative community in several ways, such as attending lectures, working in smaller groups in offices, and informal conversation at daily tea. We are located in Princeton, NJ, a great place to live with excellent schools and many enjoyable indoor and outdoor activities. We maintain close relations with both Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study, frequently attending their events. In addition to easy access to New York and Philadelphia, Princeton is a bikeable, small town home to a diverse, international citizenry and high quality options for dining and the arts.
