THE UNIVERSITY: California State University, East Bay is known for award-winning programs, expert instruction, a diverse student body, and a choice of more than 100 career-focused fields of study.  The ten major buildings of the Hayward Hills campus, on 342 acres, contain over 150 classrooms and teaching laboratories, over 177 specialized instructional rooms, numerous computer labs and a library, which contains a collection of over one million items. The University also has campuses in Concord and Oakland, as well as Online.  With an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students and 600 faculty, CSUEB is organized into four colleges: Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences; Business and Economics; Education and Allied Studies; and Science.  The University offers bachelor's degrees in 47 fields, minors in 51 fields, master's degrees in 33 fields, 9 credentials programs, 12 certificate options, and 1 doctoral degree program.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Mathematics has 10 full-time faculty members, with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. The faculty is committed to teaching its undergraduate and Master’s level students. The Department offers approximately 40 undergraduate mathematics courses and 15 graduate courses. Classes are offered both in day and evening. Classes are generally small, with many opportunities for faculty-student contact.

The Department offers a B.S. in mathematics, with a pathway for mathematics teaching, a minor, a preparation program for future high school teachers, and a graduate degree program (M.S.). There are approximately 80 undergraduate math majors and 60 masters students. Many M.S. students aim for teaching positions in community colleges, and a few continue on to Ph.D. programs. 

DUTIES OF THE POSITION:  Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay may include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses. Duties include teaching courses at B.S. and M.S. levels, curriculum development at both levels, and sustaining a research program. In addition to teaching and scholarly activities, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

An applicant needs the ability to

  1. Teach a broad range of courses required for the mathematics major, both upper division and graduate level. 
  2. Show a scholarly interest in the design and effective implementation of innovative practices in gateway service classes. 
  3. Be actively engaged in and sustain a mathematical research program, which can include mathematics education, writing internal and external grant proposals, and service on state and national committees and professional organizations.
  4. Model good pedagogy by using a variety of innovative and proven pedagogical approaches including the use of technology.
  5. Engage students in research experiences and expose them to new and relevant areas of mathematics.

RANK AND SALARY:  Assistant Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience.  Subject to budgetary authorization.


Applicants must have a Ph.D. in mathematics by August, 2018. Candidates with successful teaching experience at the University level are preferred. We are looking for candidates who have demonstrated effective teaching and research skills, and the ability to engage and challenge students through student research, and innovative pedagogy. Candidates must be highly qualified to teach a variety of mathematics courses at the undergraduate level for both non-STEM and STEM majors and at the graduate level in their area of expertise. We are particularly interested in a candidate who can attract strong undergraduates through instruction in the lower division and who can offer topics courses that are relevant to emerging fields that rely on mathematics.
