Position Description:    

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Oklahoma (OU) is seeking to strengthen its First-Year Mathematics program. OU is experiencing an exciting multi-year period of growth that is in part fueled by its noteworthy retention of incoming students. We are looking for candidates who understand the balance of meeting the needs of incoming students while maintaining academic excellence. We encourage dynamic and innovative individuals to apply for one of two full-time, renewable term faculty positions beginning August 2018.

For both positions, normal duties consist of teaching the equivalent of 9-12 credits per semester and rendering service to the department, university, and profession. Some evening work may be expected.

One of the positions would require helping with tutoring and administrative duties in the Mathematics Tutoring Center and overseeing the quantitative literacy course that is offered to students whose majors do not require additional mathematics. The other position would involve coordinating one of the multi-section, 1000-level mathematics courses.

Expectations

Requirements for the successful candidate include:

  • an earned Master’s degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education
  • a record of exemplary teaching either:
  • post-secondary mathematics courses at the 1000-level (courses ranging from College Algebra to Calculus but also credit-bearing courses aimed at first-year students not pursuing STEM fields) or
  •  secondary mathematics courses at or above the level of College Algebra

Other desirable qualities of candidates include, but are not limited to:

  • ·an understanding of (and experience in implementing) active learning activities in the classroom
  • a willingness and ability to coordinate multi-section courses
  • documented excellence in teaching large lecture sections
  •  tutoring and/or administrative experience in a mathematics help center or mathematics tutoring center
  • innovative use of digital resources in instruction and assessment
  • an active research agenda related to research in undergraduate mathematics education in general and first-year mathematics in particular
  • a track record of mathematics education conference presentations
  • experience using course learning management platforms
