Applications are invited for the post of University Lecturer in Mathematics/Director of Taught Postgraduate Education (DTPE) to commence on 1 September 2018 or by agreement. This new University Lectureship post, to be held in any field covered within the Faculty of Mathematics, will also be responsible for leading the operational and strategic development of Part III of the Mathematical Tripos.  Appointment to the permanent Lectureship position is subject to a probationary period of five years with appointment to the retirement age thereafter, conditional on satisfactory performance. The Director of Taught Postgraduate Education responsibilities will be for a period of five years in the first instance.

Part III is a world-famous postgraduate course which is taught primarily through an unparalleled number of lecture courses spanning all aspects of mathematics and theoretical physics, and typically admits 160 postgraduate students per year (many from the EU and overseas) to join about 90 students who have been undergraduates in Cambridge.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in mathematics, will have a track record of excellent research publications, and will be expected to lead and pursue a research programme of the highest standard.  The candidate should also be able to demonstrate leadership in the development, management and delivery of courses/programmes.

Particular duties of the DTPE would include:

       ensuring a balanced offering of courses with content which ensures world-class training through active, ongoing liaison with the different subject areas within the Faculty;

       leading the development of innovative provision and delivery of teaching and learning;

       maintaining and enhancing non-lecture-based teaching provision, particularly focussed on ongoing feedback to the candidates;

       coordinating the admissions process of external candidates, developing data acquisition to identify candidates who have the potential to thrive within Part III, while ensuring the maintenance of quality and numbers at a sustainable level

       developing strategies for increasing admissions of women in Part III

As for other lectureships, applicants will be expected to investigate new areas of research and funding opportunities, and submit grant applications. They will also be required to write papers for publication, attend conferences, network with national/international colleagues and give presentations. The successful candidate will be offered a substantially reduced teaching load to compensate for the DTPE role.

In exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to offer a supplement to the salary range stated for this role of up to £10,000.  Any such supplement would be awarded on basis of a demonstrable history of exceptional achievement and is entirely at the discretion of the University.
