Research Associate

Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. The position is funded by the European Research Council, and forms part of a program involving scientific computing, Mirror Symmetry, and the classification of Fano manifolds.

Duties and responsibilities

The project will involve working closely with Tom Coates (and his group at Imperial) on topics related to a program to find and classify Fano manifolds using Mirror Symmetry. Depending on the expertise and interests of the candidate, this could involve algebraic geometry, polyhedral combinatorics, Mirror Symmetry, scientific computing, or algebraic number theory. The position will also involve working with Tom Coates and Alexander Kasprzyk to develop the open source mathematical software that underlies this research program: see https://bitbucket.org/fanosearch/ and https://bitbucket.org/pcas/

Essential requirements

The successful candidate must hold a PhD, or equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience, in a research field relevant to the project: algebraic geometry, polyhedral combinatorics, Mirror Symmetry, scientific computing, or algebraic number theory.

It is essential that you have: Experience: • A track record of independent research • Experience of, or openness to, collaborative research Skills and abilities: • Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers • Ability to identify, develop and apply new concepts, techniques and methods • High level analytical capability
