Do you want to join a friendly, cooperative group of teachers and scholars? The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics at Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Statistics to begin September 1, 2019.

The Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics Department includes twelve faculty and resides in a spacious and well-equipped building. The statistics major and minor focus on interdisciplinary applications of statistical methods with foundational courses in both math and computer science. The statistics minor is popular with students from diverse fields including biology, economics, environmental science, and psychology, among others. The Department encourages and recognizes interdisciplinary collaboration as scholarly work and the close-knit Gustavus community provides many collaborative opportunities.

Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The annual teaching assignment will be six courses, normally three courses per semester. Primary responsibilities include teaching courses in statistics at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and conducting research in statistics or its applications. Faculty in the department advise students majoring in statistics, mathematics, and computer science, as well as first-year students who have not yet decided on a major.

Required Qualifications: We seek candidates with an earned doctorate in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science or a related field, but will also consider candidates who have achieved ABD status. The successful candidate will have prior experience teaching statistics and the ability to teach both applied courses and mathematical statistics. Candidates must have demonstrated effectiveness in teaching. A commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising is essential.

Preferred Qualifications: We are interested in candidates who will diversify the expertise and experience in the department, with a preference for applicants who have experience using statistical software such as R, Minitab, or SPSS in the classroom. Applicants should demonstrate sympathy with the aims and ideals of liberal arts education and a commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates are encouraged to describe previous activities mentoring women or members of underrepresented groups. Experience conducting undergraduate research is highly valued, as is experience working as a consultant or in collaboration with other disciplines.
