Position Location: Berkeley, California 94720-5070, United States [map]

Application Deadline: 2018/10/01* (posted 2018/08/01, listed until 2018/10/01)
Position Description:

*** the list date or deadline for this position has passed, and no new applications will be accepted. ***

Description: MSRI will appoint Research Professors in its program in Higher Categories and Categorification, which will be held January 21, 2020 to May 29, 2020.

Research professorships are intended for senior researchers who will be making key contributions to the program, including the mentoring of postdoctoral fellows, and who will be in residence for three or more months.

Research professors may receive up to $6,000 per month for reimbursement of local expenses during their visit to MSRI, as well as a travel allowance for one round-trip from their home institution to the San Francisco area.

We wish to bring together Research Professors whose current research interests and objectives are clearly in line with the goals of the program; this includes both technicians who are largely interested in the foundational aspects of higher category theory, and end-users who are interested in the implementation of higher categorical tools in allied areas of research.

Research Professors will also serve as influential mentors to junior participants, and we hope to gather researchers with a solid record of mentorship, advising, teaching, seminar organization, etc., as well as evidence of outreach across fields.

We also wish to achieve diversity by choosing researchers who represent a heterogeneous class of mathematicians across (at least) the axes of academic institutions, geography, gender, and ethnicity.

Deadline: Applications must be complete by October 01, 2018.

Note about Letter of Recommendation: MSRI is funded by the National Science Foundation and, as such, must have a transparent selection process. Having a complete dossier for each applicant allows for this. The letter of recommendation need not be elaborate, a succinct paragraph explaining why your participation in the program is desirable is all that is requested. Only one letter is required for Research Professor applications.

Eligibility: For mathematical scientists who are at the tenured associate professor or subsequent stages of their careers, and have received their PhD before the year 2009.
