Description of Responsibilities: Instructor of Mathematics - Supervisor of Calculus Gateway Courses will teach courses in the before-calculus sequence; oversee and coordinate multiple sections of these courses, ensuring curricular consistency; and engage with the faculty to implement best practices in teaching and learning. Furthermore, the Instructor will be charged with assessing the success of students in the calculus pipeline, reporting on this assessment to the department and college, and developing new solutions to ongoing challenges. Additional expectations of tenure-track faculty include holding office hours, advising students, and participating in committee work appropriate to experience. Active participation in the life of the department and the college is expected, via work in professional organizations, publications, teaching in or supervising summer programs, and grant work. The standard teaching load is 12 hours a week.


In addition, the Instructor of Mathematics - Supervisor of Calculus Gateway Courses will demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching and leadership, a commitment to undergraduate education, and the communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues both within and external to the Mathematics department.


Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics, or Mathematics Education or a related field (with significant graduate coursework in Mathematics) by the time of appointment
  • Teaching experience at the college-level as a full-time or part-time instructor, or as a graduate teaching assistant
  • A commitment to working with students of diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the scope and sequence of calculus pipeline courses and the associated obstacles to student success
  • Experience assessing factors affecting student success

Description of Department

We are a collegial department of 19 full-time faculty, offering a BA in Mathematics and BS in Applied Mathematics, plus a joint program BS in Applied Mathematical Economics, minors in Applied Statistics and in Mathematics, and concentrations for future childhood and adolescent teachers. About 18 majors graduate each year, in addition to graduates in adolescent mathematics education. We are dedicated to engaging teaching and to high standards in all of our courses. Faculty are expected to work closely with students and to stay active in the profession.
