Position Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has an opening for one postdoctoral researcher in the area of nonlinear dynamics or fluid dynamics.  The researcher will join the group of David Goluskin, working to develop and apply methods for studying nonlinear ODEs and PDEs using tools of convex optimization. These tools include sum-of-squares polynomials, semidefinite programming, and other types of conic programming; they can be used to study a wide range of dynamical properties, such as averages, extrema, and stability. Computation is essential to the research, but analytical questions can be studied also. The methods will be applied to various differential equations of scientific interest, including fluid dynamical PDEs.

A PhD in mathematics or a closely related field is required by the start date. Applicants should have strong computational skills, as well as experience with one or two of the following topics:

Dynamical systems
Fluid dynamics or other nonlinear PDEs
Convex optimization

A start date between January and September 2019 is preferred. Appointment will be for one year and renewable for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance. Salary is expected to be at least 50,000 CAD annually, depending on experience. Additional funds will be provided for academic travel. Salary and other resources can be increased through fellowships; please contact Dr. Goluskin ( as soon as possible to pursue these options. Teaching is not required, but there are opportunities to teach one or two courses per year.

Please apply through Include a brief cover letter describing relevant experience, a CV that includes a publication list, a research statement, and three reference letters. Applications are reviewed on a continuous basis and will be accepted until the position is filled.
