Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Mathematical Sciences

The George Mason University, Department of Mathematical Sciences in the College of Science (COS), located in the vibrant Washington, D.C., area, invites well-qualified candidates to apply for a twelve-month Postdoctoral Research Fellow position starting the Spring 2019 semester. The College of Science is the largest research unit within the university constituting of approximately 30 percent of the total research portfolio. With a mission to produce science that enhances society, creates clear career pathways for Mason students, and enhances economic development in the region and the nation, COS generated approximately 45 percent of the university’s proposals in fiscal year 2013. COS undertakes pioneering research endeavors that offer insight and solutions to the complex issues that challenge today’s world, and the college is committed to growing and supporting the innovation research endeavors of our faculty.

This position entails working on an Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR)-funded project entitled, “Structure Exploiting Trust Regions for Bilevel and Risk-Averse Optimization,” directed by Dr. Harbir Antil. The project is broad in scope and is aimed at algorithms for optimization problems governed by large-scale physical models given by partial differential equations (PDEs), optimization under uncertainty, fractional PDEs, inverse problems, dimensionality reduction, deep learning. The incumbent will teach one course a year. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of yearly extensions depending on the performance and funding.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in mathematics or a related area, with expertise in optimization, numerical analysis, and PDE modeling and computations.
