A postdoctoral position is available in applications of optimal transport theory to biological/environmental structures, motivated by problems in food security. The successful candidate will work with the research team of Young-Heon Kim (University of British Columbia), Brendan Pass (University of Alberta), and Dave Schneider (University of Saskatchewan and the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS)), in collaboration with the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS). This is a one year position, renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory performance. The annual salary will be $50, 000 (CAD). The location is flexible among UBC, UofA and UofS, and will be determined between the successful candidate and the hosting scientists. Teaching will be minimal, allowing the candidate to focus primarily on research.

The goal of this research project is to develop novel applications of optimal transport, or variants of it, to the analysis of dendritic structures arising in biology and agriculture, in particular, plant root shapes. The ideal candidate is a mathematically talented and original researcher, with flexible research interests varying from geometry and analysis to optimization and discrete structures. A strong background in optimal transport theory, a keen interest in applications, and an aptitude for learning about new fields will be expected.

Appointment as a Postdoctoral Fellow typically requires a PhD obtained in 2016 or later. Earlier PhDs will be considered where the research career has been interrupted by circumstances such as parental responsibilities or illness. The position is open to individuals of any nationality. Applicants should submit a CV, a list of publications, statements of research and teaching interests, and arrange for three or more letters of recommendation to be sent, one of which should address teaching ability.

Questions about the application procedure should be addressed to the hosting scientists:

Screening of applications for appointments will begin immediately but applications will be considered as long as the position remains open.
