THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Mathematics at CSUEB offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees that include a variety of courses intended to prepare students for a career in any mathematics related field or other areas that value quantitative and problem-solving skills. The program allows flexibility in breadth and depth where students can choose among courses with applied and pure emphases. The faculty are committed to creating a welcoming environment and providing opportunities for all students to explore mathematics within and beyond the classroom. 

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses, with classes meeting both day and evening. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, sustain a research program, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities. The department seeks a tenure track faculty member to help meet the goals of the CSU GI 2025 Graduation Initiative: The duties outlined below reflect these priorities. 

The applicant will 
  1. Teach one upper division undergraduate course or graduate course per semester. The remainder of instructional responsibilities will be at the lower division level in support of GI 2025 goals for all students, especially those seeking STEM and Business focused degrees.
  2. Engage in coordination of multi-section service courses and instructor and Teaching Associate training efforts. 
  3. Focus their scholarly activities in the design and effective implementation of innovative practices in gateway/service math classes with a focus on student success. 
  4. Model good pedagogy by using a variety of innovative and proven pedagogical approaches which enhance student success in service and gateway mathematics courses. 

RANK AND SALARY: Assistant or Associate Professor. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization. 

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester, 2020 

  1. Must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics by the time of appointment. 
  2. Instructional and scholarly focus, with evidence of past work, on student success in lower division mathematics and programs designed to support student success is required. This focus will be aligned with the CSU Graduation Initiative (GI 2025). 
  3. Evidence of successful and innovative teaching experience at the University level is required.
