The Computational Sciences and Engineering Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a research scientist who will focus on research into mathematical aspects of softwarized federation of science instruments, including supercomputers, storage systems, experimental facilities, local and wide-area network connections, and other systems used for DOE science projects. These infrastructures will collect measurements at various levels including IO and file systems, local and wide-area networks, computing systems and experimental facilities. The objective is to develop (a) performance modeling and analysis methods to ensure effective and robust federation designs, and develop simple but effective performance characterization parameters, and (b) rigorous, mathematically sound methods to extract performance trends to succinctly characterize the performance and derive optimized responses from measurements.

This position is an integral part of ORNL comprehensive strategy for softwarized federations of science instruments, and complements other positions in the area of computer science and algorithmics.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Collaborate with highly diverse and multidisciplinary measurement and domain-specific teams focused on developing analytical models, and measurement driven analytics and softwarization solutions Contribute to the development of mathematical models and analyses integrated into team efforts Author peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports and proposals for internal and external release as well as represent the organization via technical presentations in workshops and conferences.

Basic Qualifications:

A PhD in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Operations Research, Physics, Statistics or a related discipline. Expertise in developing and analyzing analytical models for various federated systems, including software defined X (SDX), networks, storage and IO/file systems. Preferred Qualifications:

Familiarity with analytics and statistical frameworks for measurements for trend detection and succinct performance characterization. Familiarity with measurement and analytics frameworks applicable to various science instruments. Familiarity with virtualization technologies such as virtual machines and containers (docker, vagrant, others) and kubernetes and others. Familiarity with software defined storage and IO systems, software defined wrappers for experimental facilities. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate in English to a scientific audience. Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative and multi-disciplinary. Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to meet deliverables deadlines, and adapt to changing needs. This position may require access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. The ability to access such technology without an export control license, preferred.
