Position Description:

Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) seeks to fill the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics, starting September 2020. WIT is a private technical design, sciences, and engineering university in downtown Boston, Massachusetts.

The majority of students enrolled in mathematics courses at WIT are Engineering and Computer Science majors; in addition, the University offers both major and minor degrees in Applied Mathematics. WIT promotes experiential and project-based learning to equip students entering the increasingly competitive STEAM job market.

An ideal candidate would possess a PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Operations Research, Actuarial Science, (or a terminal degree in a related discipline), and higher education teaching experience. Applicants holding a Master’s degree will be considered if they have extended professional experience in a directly related field.

The duties of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics include:

• Teaching: Faculty typically teach 3 courses in each fall and spring semester. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate some measure of experiential/project-based content in their curricula. In addition, faculty engage in collaborations across the university and with external partners to design/maintain relevant curricula. Demonstrable excellence in teaching is paramount for successful faculty at WIT.

• Scholarly Work: Faculty are expected to engage in active research within their fields of expertise. Applicants publishing in STEM journals and who can promote a measure of student involvement in their scholarly work will be preferred.

• Service to the Institute: Examples include mentoring extracurricular student organizations, and committee work.

We value creative and passionate educators who can teach to a diverse student body; as such we seek to amplify the perspectives of the faculty body and encourage applications from members of groups underrepresented in STEM.

If you are interested in preparing our next generation of engineers and designers and if you have substantial experience with project-based learning and undergraduate mathematics education innovation, then we’d love to hear from you.

In your application please include:

1. a cover letter that addresses this job description,

2. a current CV or resume, including references,

3. a research statement,

4. a statement of your teaching philosophy.

5. Three confidential letters of reference (minimally one for teaching and one for research).

Applicants submitting their materials on or before October 1, 2019 will receive full consideration.

Wentworth is an AA/EEO employer. Women and minorities are welcome to apply.
