*** the list date or deadline for this position has passed. ***

The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPI MiS) is located in the up and coming city of Leipzig, Germany and cooperates with Leipzig University. Research at the MPI MiS exploits the fruitful interaction between mathematics and the sciences. As one of the institutes of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften (MPG) – an independent, non-profit research organization, whose goal is to promote top quality research at its institutes – we participates in the a joint call (www.mprg.mpg.de) across all disciplines for applications to the position of a

Max Planck Research Group Leader.

These are temporary positions for a period of five years intended to encourage independent research by outstanding young researchers, in analogy to the Emmy Noether Program of the German Research Foundation. The standard setting and contract conditions for Max Planck Research Groups are as follows:
  • the group leader position (W2; approximately equivalent to associate professor position without tenure)
  • Postdoc position(s)
  • PhD positions
  • generous budget for travelling, inviting guests or hosting conferences
The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft offers high flexibility in the use of the allotted money, allowing the group leaders to assign their budget individually according to need.

In the past, the institute hosted several of these group leaders like Benjamin Gess (https://www.mis.mpg.de/spde/), Angkana Rüland (https://www.mis.mpg.de/pde/), or Emanuele Spadaro (http://www1.mat.uniroma1.it/people/spadaro/main.html), all of whom hold or are offered tenured positions at top universities in Europe now.

The candidates

We are looking for young researchers holding a doctoral degree who are about to develop their own research agenda. They should have already demonstrated their scientific independence by relevant publications. Candidates should have some international research experience. There is no teaching duty but the possibility to teach an advanced course in our graduate school. German language skills are not required.

Research focus

We seek candidates who fit into the broad spectrum of mathematics in the sciences and complete the existing expertise of the institute (cf. https://www.mis.mpg.de/research/groups.html). Research at MPI MiS advances existing mathematical methods and techniques for applications in the sciences and, even more important, tries to transmit the conceptual and structural approach of mathematics into new areas of research. Vice versa, we translate scientific questions and problems into mathematical challenges. Doing this, we are committed to innovative basic research on mathematics in an outward looking spirit.

Important information about the application procedure

Excellent research is irrespective of gender. However, the MPG still lacks female scientists and hereby explicitly welcome applications from highly skilled women in all disciplines. The MPG provides support for dual career couples and families. Furthermore, the MPG strives for gender and diversity equality. Therefore, applications from all genders are welcome.

For more information please consult the official announcement on www.mprg.mpg.de. On this page, information is organized according to the section of Max Planck Society the institute of choice belongs to. The Sections have separate application modalities and MPI MiS belongs to the CPT Section. We strongly recommend that candidates approach us at application@mis.mpg.de before submitting the application. .
