Position Description:

Teaching Postdoctoral Fellow of Applied Mathematics

In 2018, Virginia Military Institute launched a new sequence of general education (non-calculus) applied mathematics courses: Math that Matters.  In support of these courses, VMI seeks a two-year postdoctoral fellow (2020-2022) to be involved in the program.  The ideal candidate is a Ph.D. mathematician, applied mathematician, educational mathematician, statistician, or data scientist who demonstrates an enthusiasm towards undergraduate STEM education.  The candidate should have some awareness or knowledge of evidence-based classroom practices and an interest in learning more to further enhance their teaching practice.  The position focuses on curriculum design, course leadership, the scholarship of teaching and learning, program assessment, faculty development, and interdisciplinary collaborations in education. They are willing contributors and work well in a team environment, as multiple faculty from a variety of disciplines are involved in this project.

The fellowship also offers professional development funding for conferences, as well as opportunities to gain experience in areas of interest to the fellows, such as writing both research and expository articles for educational journals, grant writing, course improvement, faculty development, institutional assessment of downstream outcomes, leadership of multi-section coordinated courses, and interdisciplinary collaboration.  By the end of the fellowship, the fellow should be well positioned to obtain a tenure-track position at an institution seeking to enhance its undergraduate STEM program.

More information: These courses have been designed based on the recommendations of the 2014 Forum of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, SIAM’s 2016 Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction of Mathematical Modeling Education (GAIMME) Report, and the MAA’s 2018 Instructional Practices Guide.  Over the next couple of years, we have a rare opportunity to measure the impact of implementing a program in response to these national documents, as the students who have completed these programs begin to encounter quantitative material in their upper-level courses in fields such as biology, business, psychology, and international relations.

Application information: In order to receive full consideration, your application must contain a cover letter that includes a statement addressing how this fellowship aligns with your career goals, a current curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation, at least one of which addresses your pedagogical interests and/or teaching experience.  A research statement is not required, but may be included if it addresses educational research interests and/or plans for how you envision modifying your research portfolio to include more educationally focused work.
