Position Description:

Gettysburg College invites applications for a tenure-track position in mathematics at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2020. We seek candidates whose research or teaching interests encompass some aspect of applied or interdisciplinary mathematics, statistics, or data analysis. We particularly invite applications from members of any group that has been historically underrepresented in the American academy. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in one of the mathematical sciences (including statistics), or expect to complete all requirements for the degree by September 2020.

The regular teaching load for this position is five courses per academic year. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the mathematics program of an energetic department, to teach a broad range of topics in undergraduate mathematics, to involve students in internally funded research and a variety of other mathematical activities outside the classroom, and to collaborate with faculty across multiple disciplines. The College is prepared to assist newly appointed faculty members in establishing a research program; this assistance may include start-up funds and a paid pre-tenure leave.

The following are essential: (i) demonstrated success as a teacher, with clear promise of future excellent and innovative teaching in undergraduate mathematics; (ii) clear potential for an active, ongoing, and productive research program; and (iii) a desire for a career as a teacher/scholar in a liberal arts environment. In addition, preference will be given to candidates with clear potential (iv) to integrate their teaching and research with the promotion of a campus environment in which underrepresented students will thrive; (v) to expand the mathematical expertise and teaching capabilities of the department; and (vi) to pursue exceptional creative work with students.

Please submit a cover letter with your application that briefly describes how your research or teaching interests encompass some aspect of applied or interdisciplinary mathematics; the aspects of this particular position that you find attractive; and some specific ways (e.g. student mentoring, teaching or mathematical expertise, course development) that you hope to contribute to our program. Your cover letter should also succinctly address any respects in which you fulfill criteria (i)—(vi) listed above but that are not clearly presented elsewhere in your application materials.

Please also submit: a curriculum vitae; a description of your teaching methods and philosophy; and a description of your research program and objectives. Also arrange for us to receive three letters of recommendation; taken together, these letters should address both research potential and teaching effectiveness. All application materials should be submitted at http://www.mathjobs.org. Inquiries can be addressed to Dr. Benjamin Kennedy (bkennedy@gettysburg.edu).

Completed applications received by November 25, 2019 will receive full consideration.
