Summary Under the general direction of the Chair of the Department of Mathematics, the full-time, tenure track Assistant Professor of Mathematics has experience using active learning methods, and is committed to teaching undergraduate mathematics in the context of a small college that integrates the liberal arts with professional studies. Interested candidates may also teach in Hood’s master’s degree program in mathematics education. This position begins in August 2020.

Job Description

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Mathematics faculty are expected to:

Teach 21 credits of undergraduate and/or graduate courses per academic year (4-3 course load). Teach a broad range of courses, including general education courses, introductory statistics, and courses for the mathematics major, and possibly courses in our master’s degree programs in mathematics education. Use active learning, exploration, writing, and collaboration as teaching tools. Use technology as a teaching and learning tool.


Faculty are expected to be active scholars and members of the mathematics community. Evidence of scholarship may include presentations at conferences, publication in peer- reviewed journals, and research with students.

Service to the Department and the College

Faculty are expected to serve on departmental and College-wide committees, as academic advisors, as liaisons with student groups, and at Admissions and other College events during the year.

Teaching duties and expectations for scholarship and service are commensurate with the faculty member’s employment status.

Education and/or Experience A Ph.D. or equivalent in mathematics or a related subject by the time of appointment is required. Some teaching experience, perhaps as a graduate student, is required.

Mathematical Skills

A deep and broad understanding of mathematics is required, together with an interest in and aptitude for its teaching. An ability to use technology in doing and teaching mathematics is essential. The employee must be willing to learn new software as the job requires it.
