Position Description:    

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Florida is pleased to invite applications for two (2) full-time, nine-month, tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor level beginning August 16, 2020. This search is limited to the area of data science, broadly construed. This includes, but is not limited to, computational mathematics, topological data analysis, numerical analysis, and related fields with a strong connection to the theory and application of mathematics to the study of data. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes a full benefits package.

These positions are part of an exciting university-wide initiative to further its status as one of the very best research universities in the nation. The university is in the process of adding 500 new faculty to enhance teaching and research. The successful candidates will join a vibrant research department with representation across a full range of pure and applied mathematics. Moreover, the department plans to launch an undergraduate data science major in fall 2020 in collaboration with the Department of Statistics. We expect the selected candidates to take an active role in course instruction related to this program and to interact with other data scientists on campus. In particular, ample opportunities exist for engagement with the UF Informatics Institute (https://informatics.institute.ufl.edu/). Faculty also have access to HiPerGator (https://www.rc.ufl.edu/services/hipergator/), which is among the most powerful academic supercomputers in the U.S.

Requirements for these positions include a PhD in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, an independent research program, capacity to compete for external funding and direct PhD students, as well as excellent communication and teaching skills. An interest in teaching innovation is welcomed.
