The University of Minnesota's School of Mathematics anticipates hiring one or more temporary Assistant Professors within its Center for Educational Programs (MathCEP). The postdoctoral position begins in Fall 2020 and emphasizes teaching, outreach and scholarship activities. The typical applicant is a new or recent PhD looking to increase their experience before applying to tenure-track jobs at liberal arts colleges or other schools which emphasize teaching. As a large research department, the School of Mathematics provides opportunities to continue a research program along with the position's teaching duties. MathCEP also provides opportunities to supervise undergraduate research projects.

MathCEP has a wide range of undergraduate and outreach programs. See for more information. Depending on experience and interest, duties include each of the following:

  • Excellent teaching in (a) a program involving mathematically talented high school students in honors-level calculus courses at the University (UMTYMP) and (b) regular mathematics department courses;
  • Supervising undergraduate research during the summer and/or academic year;
  • Serving as a managing editor of the Minnesota Journal of Undergraduate Mathematics;
  • Development and supervision of academic year enrichment programs, summer programs;
  • Educational professional/scholarship activities (i.e. teacher professional development programs and materials, and/or relevant statistical/descriptive studies and publications).

The majority of the teaching load will be within UMTYMP courses. A specific balance between UMTYMP and mathematics department courses can be negotiated on a per-candidate basis at the time of a job offer.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematics by September 1, 2020, and teaching experience at the undergraduate level are required. Preference will be given to applicants within 3 years of their Ph.D. degree whose background and experience are compatible with the objectives described above. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in interacting with K-12 mathematics teachers and students, but prior experience is not required. This position will initially be a two-year appointment contingent on funding, with the possibility of an additional one-year appointment based on satisfactory performance and funding.
