The Mathematics Department at Central Washington University seeks to fill a mathematics tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning September 16, 2020 who can support the department in the area of probability, statistics, actuarial science, or data science. We are an active and vibrant department of fifteen full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty, eleven full-time non-tenure track instructors, and 4-7 adjunct faculty members. Our department has offered an actuarial science specialization for 30 years, most recently as a stand-alone major since 2010. The department also offers degrees in mathematics, mathematics education, and applied mathematics. The department enrolls approximately 2000 students each quarter. The average class size is about 20 with a maximum of thirty-five students. We have a longstanding reputation as being one of the premiere institutions in the Pacific Northwest for the preparation of highly trained actuaries, math teachers, and math graduates. The enrollment in our mathematics honors program is robust and increasing.

Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include teaching a range of courses from general education to courses for majors in the department, including courses in probability, statistics, actuarial science, analysis or data science. The successful candidate will be expected to possess superior teaching abilities and a willingness to teach a wide range of courses at all levels of mathematics, including upper-division actuarial science courses. The average teaching load is twelve credits per quarter. Other responsibilities include advising students, contributing to the actuarial science program, engaging in scholarship appropriate to the applicant’s field, and service to the university and profession.

Qualifications: Required:
• Earned doctorate by starting date in Mathematics or Statistics with significant background in Probability, Statistics, Actuarial Science, or Data Science. Evidence of teaching excellence and strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.
• Evidence of ability to develop an active research/scholarship program.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students in mathematics courses.
• Experience or interest in teaching courses in probability, statistics, actuarial science, and/or data science.

• Teaching experience at the college level.
• Commitment to collaborate with students on research projects.
• Professional or research experience in actuarial science or a related area.
• Experience or interest in teaching courses in analysis and other upper division undergraduate mathematics coursework.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
