The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a Professional Practice Assistant Professor to serve as the Director of the Aggie Math Learning Center (AMLC), to begin July 1, 2020. The position is a 12 month, non-tenure track appointment. Outstanding performance in the position can lead to promotion to Professional Practice Associate Professor and subsequently to Professional Practice Professor.


AMLC is a drop-in math/stat tutoring center serving all USU undergraduates. The AMLC brings together learning support (such as one-on-one tutoring as well as supported collaboration among classmates), teaching support (such as facilitating and developing high impact practices and directing pre-exam review sessions) and curricular development to enhance the experience of early-career undergraduates in mathematics and statistics classes.  The Director of the AMLC oversees the logistics of the AMLC, assesses its impact, and assists Math & Stat  faculty with curriculum initiatives. The AMLC Director will also teach 1-2 class(es) per year. The Department is committed to giving students an impactful and transformative experience and has a goal of engaging undergraduate students in high impact experiences. Accordingly, preference will be given to candidates who exhibit a potential to facilitate undergraduate research. The Director will supervise and train both graduate and undergraduate student personnel staffing the AMLC. Given the AMLC role in retention and success of early career undergraduate students, it is of paramount importance that candidates be committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctoral Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics/Statistics Education or a closely related field, including 24 credits of graduate level mathematics and/or statistics coursework
  • A record of excellence in teaching and mentoring ·

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in administration or management, particularly related to graduate and undergraduate students
  • record of scholarly performance
  • Evidence of  of expertise related to the training and development of tutors and/or teaching assistants

Aggie Math Learning Center

The AMLC is USU's drop-in mathematics/statistics tutoring center and is intended to improve the retention and success of early-career undergraduates of all majors.
