The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maine invites applications for at least one nine-month, academic year appointment as Lecturer, expected to start September 1, 2020. This position is ongoing, contingent upon satisfactory performance.

We are especially interested in applicants who can contribute to the University of Maine’s commitment to an inclusive and diverse student body that includes first-generation and low-income students and those from groups that are under-represented in mathematics, such as women and minorities.

A graduate degree (masters level or higher) in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics with an emphasis in statistics, or a related area is required by date of hire; some preference may be given to candidates with degrees in the three specified areas. Some preference may be given to candidates with a doctoral degree by date of hire, depending on the area of the doctorate. Some preference may also be given to candidates with other qualifications and/or scholarly activity relevant to the responsibilities of the position. Demonstrated effective college-level teaching in statistics is required, as is proficiency in written and oral communication.

Responsibilities for this position include teaching three courses per semester; these will largely be lower-level service courses, but may also include upper-level material, depending on the department’s needs and the individual’s interests. Service to the department, college and university is expected, as is participation in course coordination and curriculum development.

The department offers BA, BS, and MA degrees in mathematics, and anticipates opening a BA in statistics shortly. In addition, our faculty provide mathematics and statistics instruction to the broader university community, are engaged in various outreach activities in our region and state, and are highly active in research.
