The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Colorado Mesa University invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in applied mathematics. Colorado Mesa University is a comprehensive regional public higher education institution with a B.S. program in Mathematics and a new and growing concentration in applied mathematics. We also offer a Graduate Certificate program in applied mathematics. For this position, we seek a highly motivated, teaching-centered colleague who will actively engage with students. Applicants must have an academic background in applied mathematics and the ability to teach undergraduate courses covering applied topics. Our current course offerings include such topics as ordinary and partial differential equations, mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, and numerical methods.We also welcome applicants with an interest and ability to develop and teach courses in other areas of applied mathematics.

Grand Junction is located in beautiful western Colorado, where the moderate climate permits a variety of year-round outdoor recreation activities. The city and surrounding area, located midway between Denver and Salt Lake City, with a population of approximately 150,000, serve as the economic hub of the region.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Teach undergraduate-level mathematics courses.

Maintain an active program of scholarship.

Serve as a mentor for student research projects and activities.

Provide student academic advising and evaluation.

Participate in professional development activities.

Engage in service to the department, university, and profession.

Perform other program and department-level duties as assigned.

The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester; some assigned courses may be taught on-line, hybrid, or via distance delivery modalities. Scholarship in the discipline, involvement with advising and service to the department and profession are expected.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.



Ph.D. in mathematics or applied mathematics from a regionally accredited institution, completed by August 2020; ABD candidates may be considered.
An academic background in applied mathematics, as demonstrated by dissertation topic, current scholarly activities, and/or recent teaching experience.
Experience in teaching undergraduate mathematics courses.
Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching.
Effective communication and organizational skills.


Excellent communication skills, a record of outstanding teaching of undergraduate mathematics, and the ability to teach a variety of courses that serve applied mathematics majors as well as service courses for non-majors. Interest and ability to teach courses in the Graduate Certificate program is also a plus.
Evidence of dedication to scholarship, particularly in the mentoring of undergraduate research, and a demonstrated commitment to service activities will help to further distinguish the applicant.
