The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of 

Senior Lecturer in Mathematics, for a fixed-term of 1 September 2020 to 31 August 2024. 

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland is a world class research institution training mathematicians and statisticians for diverse jobs in industry, education, and academic research. The main research areas in the department are mathematical analysis, geometry, stochastics, inverse problems, and statistics with their applications. In mathematical analysis and geometry the research is focused on geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and geometry of metric groups. In stochastics the key research area is stochastic analysis. The research group in Inverse problems focuses its research on inverse problems in geometry and partial differential equations. These have applications e.g. in medical and industrial imaging. In statistics the main research areas are spatial statistics, time series analysis, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, cost-efficient design, biometry and environmental statistics. The department is a member of the network of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems. 

The main duties of the University Lecturer include teaching, research and supervision. It is also expected that lecturers take part in developing the department and actively apply for research funding. 

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. A good command of English language and an ability to teach in Finnish are regarded as an advantage for the applicant.

Strong preference will be given to candidates whose research interests fall in the main research areas of the department. Senior lecturer is expected to have doctor’s degree, excellent records in conducting scientific research as well as in educating and supervising undergraduate and graduate students. 

The annual salary range will be approximately 39,000 – 54,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. 

A trial period of six months will be used when the position is first filled.

  5. A short (1-2 pages) description of the applicant’s pedagogical training and teaching merits
  6. A short (2–3 pages) description of the applicant’s academic research, scientific merits and research leadership merits, including a clarification on received external funding and responsibilities in externally funded research projects
