The Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Science, Technology, and Medicine (FSTM) of the University of Luxembourg (UL) has an opening for an Associate Professor in Mathematics (promotion track) – Area of Statistics and Machine Learning.

  • Ref: F1-50011779 (to be mentioned in all correspondence)
  • Full-time position (40 hrs/week)
  • Earliest starting date: September 2020
  • Permanent position, with promotion track (after 5 years there is the possibility of being promoted to full professor after an evaluation). In case of an excellent more senior candidate, appointment at the level of full professor can be considered
Your Role

The position at the Associate Professor level follows Luxembourg’s promotion-track scheme, according to which the initial appointment is a permanent position contract. Upon a successful evaluation, the candidate will be offered a promotion as a Full Professor.

To diversify and reinforce the existing skills and expertise within the Department of Mathematics, the candidate is expected to:

  • Perform high level research at the interface of Statistics and Computer Science
  • Apply for competitive third-party funding
  • Setup and manage a research group
  • Establish connections and collaborations with the industry and the financial sector
  • Contribute to the teaching of Statistics and related subjects in existing teaching programs
  • Contribute to the creation of new teaching programs in Data Science
Your Profile

The Department of Mathematics is seeking for outstanding candidates in the area of Mathematical Statistics, with specific emphasis on Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Big Data and related subjects.

Mid- to advanced-stage researchers who have already demonstrated excellence in these domains are encouraged to apply. Candidates who bring expertise bridging current areas of research present in the university and that are open for interdisciplinary collaborations, both within academia and the industry, will be viewed favourably. The successful candidate is expected to take active part in the creation of teaching programs in Data Science at Luxembourg University, as well as to apply for joint or individual third-party funding, both at the national and European level. Evidence of these abilities (as portrayed by the candidate’s track record) will be a crucial selection criterion.
