The Carleton College Department of Mathematics and Statistics anticipates hiring a Visiting Assistant Professor in Statistics to begin September 1, 2021. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal for a second year. A PhD in statistics, biostatistics or data science in hand or imminent completion by September 1 is preferred. Candidates with a PhD in a closely related field may be considered, but they must have training in statistics and be proficient with the software package R.

Responsibilities include teaching five statistics courses (spread out over our calendar of three ten-week terms), supervising a small-group senior capstone project, and participating in departmental discussions on our evolving statistics program. The department, which includes four statisticians, offers a major in statistics. We offer unique undergraduate opportunities including research experiences and a statistical consulting class in which students work in teams on data analysis projects solicited from the local community.

Carleton is a highly selective liberal arts college with a student body of approximately 2,000 located in the historic and thriving two-college town of Northfield, Minnesota. We are in commuting distance of the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, whose greater metro area has a diverse population of three million people and a rich variety of cultural resources. The fourteen-member Department of Mathematics and Statistics resides in a modern building with excellent facilities including a dedicated computing lab. The faculty is passionate about teaching and active in scholarship. We are particularly interested in applicants who will contribute to a vibrant college-wide culture of undergraduate research, and who have a commitment to attracting and retaining students from underserved groups. For further information about the department consult the Carleton mathematics and statistics website at www.carleton.edu/math/.

Applicants should submit the following materials at go.carleton.edu/jobsearch: (1) a letter of interest; (2) a statement about teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment that includes (i) courses in our curriculum that the applicant would like to teach, (ii) an idea for a small-group senior capstone (“comps”) project, (iii) how you would contribute to a college community that embraces a diversity of people and perspectives as one of its core values; (3) curriculum vitae; (4) graduate transcript; (5) contact information for three letters of recommendation. At least one letter should specifically address teaching experience.

Electronic submission is preferred but materials may be mailed to Stats Search, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Carleton College, One North College Street, Northfield, MN 55057-4025. Inquiries may be emailed to statsearch@carleton.edu.
