The Southeast Center for Mathematics and Biology (SCMB) invites applications for postdoctoral scholar positions to start no later than August 2022.

SCMB is an NSF-Simons Research Center for Mathematics of Complex Biological Systems. It is headquartered at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and has six partner institutions around the southeast --- Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tulane University, the University of South Florida, the University of Florida, Clemson University, and Duke University.

A core mission of SCMB is catalyzing new cross-disciplinary collaborations between interdisciplinary mathematicians and experimental biologists. As part of that initiative, the center is supporting a second cohort of seven postdoctoral positions for recent PhD's.

Three of seven positions have already been filled. The four Seed Projects with an open postdoctoral position and the associated SCMB home institutions are: (1) Georgia Institute of Technology – “RNA structural ensembles in evolution” (2) Oak Ridge National Laboratory – “Identifying disorder-to-order transitions in post- translationally modified proteins” (3) Tulane – “Stochastic modeling in cellular internalization and transport” (4) University of South Florida – “Discrete and topological models for DNA-RNA interactions”

Each postdoctoral scholar will be appointed at the home institution indicated. S/he will be mentored by an interdisciplinary mathematician there, and collaborate with biosystems experimentalists at Georgia Tech as part of an SCMB-funded Seed Project team. For more information on the different Seed Projects, see

Each position will provide a competitive yearly salary with standard benefits. The appointment is expected to be for two years, with annual renewal subject to satisfactory progress. Extension to a third year may be possible, contingent on available funding. Based on candidate availability, an appointment may begin May 2022, August 2022 or another mutually agreeable time.

Requirements include: A PhD (or its equivalent) in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics or other closely related field; Demonstrated research excellence; Strong oral and written communication skills.

Applications from recent PhDs (within three years of the start of the appointment) will receive priority review.

Note that prior interdisciplinary experience is not required; excellent candidates looking to broaden their field of interest are strongly encouraged to apply.

SCMB is committed to diversity in excellence, and participating faculty have strong track records supporting inclusive research environments. Hence, applications by qualified candidates from groups underrepresented in the mathematical sciences are particularly encouraged.

Applications must be submitted through the website.

For full consideration, all required materials must be included. Required materials are an AMS Standard Cover Sheet, cover letter, curriculum vitae (including publication list), research statement, teaching statement, and four letters of recommendation. One letter of recommendation must explicitly address teaching interest, abilities, and related experience.

Note that the candidate's cover letter must clearly communicate interest in an interdisciplinary postdoctoral position and clearly state one, or more, specific Seed Projects of interest from the list of four above. Projects stated in the cover letter have priority, so candidates are encouraged to consider all four projects carefully when making their selection(s).

Candidates are encouraged to apply by March 15th, 2022. However, review of applications will continue until the positions are filled.

Questions regarding specific Seed Projects should be directed to the individual faculty listed under

Christine Heitsch – Georgia Institute of Technology Julie Mitchell – Oak Ridge National Laboratory Scott McKinley – Tulane University Natasha Jonoska – University of South Florida

General questions regarding SCMB postdoctoral positions may be directed to
