Saarland University is a campus-based university in the south-west of Germany with around 17,000 students, a distinct international focus and pronounced research-oriented profile. Numerous research institutions in the close vicinity of the University and a targeted support of research collaborations make Saarland University an ideal place for innovation and technology transfer.

All aspects of mathematics are represented at Saarland University. The departments of mathematics and computer science are bound by close cooperations and three joint professorships in a common faculty. Computer science, including related subjects such as mathematics, is one of the focal points of Saarland University. It has an international reputation evidenced by numerous ERC grants, Leibniz research prizes and competitive network projects.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saarland University is looking to strengthen this synergy and is inviting applications for the following position (tenured full professorship, German salary scale W3) commencing at the earliest opportunity.

Professorship (W3) for Mathematics and Computer Science with a Focus on Mathematical Data Analysis (reference number W1998)

The successful candidate will have exceptional research and teaching skills, international visibility, and a research focus in applied mathematics which has central contributions to deterministic mathematical data analysis and strengthens the link to computer science. Expertise in at least one of the following areas should be demonstrated: continuous optimization, applied harmonic analysis, compressed sensing, modelling and numerical methods for variational processes and differential equations, inverse problems, and control theory. The inclusion of modern methods in machine learning is desirable. We expect a willingness to collaborate with other groups of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science as well as interest in interdisciplinary cooperations, including within larger collaborative projects.

The position is a joint professorship in the departments of mathematics and computer science. We expect active participation in research and teaching, including undergraduate and service lectures in mathematics and computer science, in particular within our undergaduate programme 'Mathematics and Computer Science'. Candidates should possess excellent scientific qualifications, very good didactic skills and a commitment to teaching. The language of instruction is English, except for compulsory undergraduate lectures. If necessary, we allow an adequate period for German language acquisition.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saarland University closely collaborates with the Max Planck Institutes for Informatics and for Software Systems, the CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), and the Center for Bioinformatics. All are located on campus.

The appointment will be made in accordance with the general provisions of German public sector employment law. Candidates must have a university degree, experience in and an aptitude for academic teaching. They will have proven aptness for original scientific work (usually documented by the quality of the doctorate or PhD in an appropriate subject) and will have demonstrated a capacity for high-quality, independent research either through a Habilitation or advanced scientific work at a level equivalent to a German Habilitation or by having been appointed to a junior/assistant professorship. Candidates are expected to have scientifically relevant, high-quality publications, experience with (particularly research-oriented) external funding, and innovative teaching concepts at all levels (bachelor, master, PhD), together with willingness to teach in English, supervise undergraduate projects and support early-career researchers.

At Saarland University, we view internationalization as a process that spans all aspects of university life. We therefore expect members of our professorial staff to engage in activities that promote and foster further internationalization. Special support will be provided for collaborative work with existing international partners such as the European University ‘Transform4Europe’ (www.transform4europe.eu) and the ‘University of the Greater Region’ (www.uni-gr.eu), which we would like to further develop.

In accordance with the objectives of its equal opportunities plan, Saarland University seeks to increase the proportion of women in professorial positions and applications from qualified women candidates are there-fore strongly encouraged. Preferential consideration will be given to severely disabled candidates of equal eligibility.
