POSITION DESCRIPTION 

The Department of Statistics and Applied Probability at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor position, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2022.

The appointment can be tenured at the associate level, or tenure-track assistant teaching professor level. The emphasis of this position is statistical methodology, computation, and data literacy. The Department is looking for individuals with experience in, or strong potential for, teaching Statistics and Data Science at the introductory undergraduate level, and for contributing to the curriculum and pedagogy of the Department. 

The Department comprises 21 permanent faculty members, as well as more than ten visitors and postdocs. We offer majors in Statistics and Data Science, Financial Mathematics and Statistics, and Actuarial Science, as well as a minor in Statistical Science with total undergraduate enrollment of over 1500 students. 

Responsibilities of teaching-track faculty include teaching and teaching related tasks for lower and upper division undergraduate courses; mentorship of undergraduate students including supervision of student group capstone projects; professional and/or scholarly achievement and creative activity, particularly relating to instruction and pedagogy; and participation in university service. Faculty in this title are members of the Academic Senate, with benefits and privileges that parallel the professor track. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

QUALIFICATIONS 
Basic qualifications (required at time of application) 
Applicants must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D. (or equivalent) except the dissertation, in Statistics, Computer Science, or Data Science related areas at the time of application. 

Additional qualifications (required at time of start) PhD required by appointment start date. 

Preferred qualifications 
A proven record in teaching excellence and innovation in teaching methods. 

Expertise in teaching courses on statistical modeling, data science methods, or computational methods including R or Python, is preferred. 

Candidates wishing to be considered for a tenure-track appointment must have a record of teaching potential. Candidates wishing to be considered for a tenured appointment are expected to have at least 5 years of undergraduate teaching experience with a wide range of courses taught, or equivalent mentoring experience.
