The Department of Applied Mathematics at Illinois Institute of Technology seeks well-prepared candidates for a postdoctoral position in Data-Intensive Scientific Machine Learning. This is a collaborative project with Johns Hopkins University, Argonne National Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, and is devoted to developing stable and robust deep-learning based forecasting for dynamical systems. In this role you will be performing foundational research by developing novel methods and algorithms. In addition, you will leverage the developed algorithms to solve challenges related to robustness and stability for various critical applications such as modeling for the geophysical sciences.

Of key interest to this project are techniques related to developing structure-preserving neural networks and generative models such as normalizing flows, extracting stochastic governing laws, and predicting stochastic dynamics. A strong background in the theory, analysis, and numerical methods for dynamical systems and/or stochastic dynamical systems is important and experience with using HPC infrastructure is valuable. Candidates with experience in differential geometry and/or manifold learning would be particularly well-suited to this project. You will be expected to actively collaborate with mathematicians, computer scientists, physicists, and domain scientists, and will have the opportunity to build an independent research program.

The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art computing resources at Argonne National Laboratory. Position Requirements

Requirements: • PhD in mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline (completed within the last 3 years, or soon to be completed) • Graduate/postgraduate research in machine learning & dynamical systems; Programming experience in one of Tensorflow, Pytorch, JAX preferred

Desired skills: • Experience in reduced-order modeling, approximate inertial manifolds, differential geometry, manifold learning • Experience in interdisciplinary research involving computer scientists/mathematicians and discipline scientists

Details about the department can be found at https://www.iit.edu/applied-math. Illinois Institute of Technology is a private Ph.D.-granting research university with world-renowned programs in engineering, architecture, the sciences, humanities, psychology, business, law, and design. Founded in 1890, Illinois Tech was born different. It was built on the promise set forth in minister Frank Wakely Gunsaulus’ “Million Dollar Sermon” to provide access to higher education for students from all different backgrounds and to make a difference in the world through technology-oriented education. This guiding mission and purpose – where students, including those underrepresented in technology, could prepare for meaningful roles in a changing industrial society and achieve professional and economic advancement – remains just as relevant today. Thus, diversity and inclusion are part of the day-to-day experience at Illinois Tech and the centerpiece of its culture. As such, Illinois Tech is home to a diverse and global student population, is committed to providing opportunities to enhance the diversity of its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply for this position, especially those underrepresented in the field, including, but not limited to, women, African Americans, Latinx, Indigenous peoples and others. With a very diverse student body of 7,800, Illinois Tech is a private, research university with programs in science, engineering, psychology, architecture, business, design and law. Illinois Tech is located in a city-park like campus in the heart of the vibrant city of Chicago.

Illinois Institute of Technology is an EEO/AA/Title VI/Title IX/Section 504/ADA/ADEA employer committed to enhancing equity, inclusion and diversity within its community. Illinois Tech seeks applications from all individuals regardless of race, color, sex, marital status, religion, creed, national origin, disability, age, military or veteran status, sexual orientation, and/or gender identity and expression. All qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for employment.
