The Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS) at Paderborn University is an internationally regarded Research Center dedicated to photonic quantum technologies from fundamental research to practical applications. The aim is to and develop both novel technologies for photonic quantum applications and the underlying theories and concepts, with a particular focus on the understanding and control of photonic quantum simulators and quantum computers. PhoQS provides a highly interdisciplinary environment, with scientists from physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, and computer science working together to further the second quantum revolution. Within the scope of PhoQS, the Institute of Mathematics, part of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics, is seeking to fill the following position at the earliest opportunity:

Junior Research Group Leader (f/m/d)
(salary is according to 14 TV-L)

Employment is planned initially for three years, which may be extended for a further two years after a positive evaluation according to the legal regulations (WissZeitVG). We seek a junior research group leader with research focus in Mathematical Physics, whose research expertise further strengthens the theoretical expertise in Quantum Information Theory and Quantum Technologies at the Institute of Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS).

At Paderborn University, Junior Research Group Leaders are offered an attractive research environment to support their excellent fledging academic career. Suitable candidates for the position will have already demonstrated excellent scientific achievements (commensurate with the stage of career). The new Junior Research Group Leader is expected to establish an independent research group in particular to independently supervise research students and acquire research funding. The new junior research group leader is also expected to contribute to the teaching duties of the Department of Mathematics including mathematics classes for students of other Departments up to a the teaching load of four hours per week. At the beginning of the employment, courses can be offered in English as well as German. It is expected that the candidate will be able to teach in both languages after a transition period. German courses are available if required.

The new junior research group leader is expected to have established an independent research profile related to one of the following areas:
  • Mathematics of Quantum Information, Quantum Communication
  • Mathematical Aspects of Quantum Computing
  • Mathematical Physics of Complex Quantum Systems
  • Stochastic Methods of Quantum Mechanics
Willingness and enthusiasm to cooperate with colleagues from the Departments of Mathematics as well as Computer Science and/or Physics at Paderborn University is required. Hiring requirement: Suitable candidates have completed their Ph.D. (preferably within the last 5 years) and have demonstrated extraordinary scientific achievements after their PhD as well as proven teaching experience. Experience in the acquisition and administration of third-party funding is desirable.
