The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a lecturer position in mathematics beginning in Fall Term 2023. Ideally, candidates should have common research interests with current members of the Department. Current research areas include algebra and number theory, applied and computational mathematics, combinatorics and discrete mathematics, functional analysis, geometry, logic, and topology.

The department (math.dartmouth.edu) is home to 23 tenured and tenure-track faculty members. Part of the School of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Mathematics has a strong Ph.D. program and outstanding undergraduate majors. Members of the department have collaborative connections across the Arts and Sciences, with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Tuck School of Business. Applied math faculty also regularly collaborate with scientists at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), an army lab located two miles from Dartmouth.

Dartmouth undergraduate and graduate student populations are diverse by many measures. We are especially interested in applicants with a record of successful teaching and mentoring of students from all backgrounds (including first-generation college students, low-income students, racial and ethnic minorities, women, LGBTQ, etc.) and who have a demonstrated ability to contribute to Dartmouth’s undergraduate diversity initiatives in STEM research, such as the Women in Science Program, E. E. Just STEM Scholars Program, and Academic Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (ASURE).

Lecturers teach four ten-week courses distributed over three of the four Dartmouth terms. Teaching opportunities span the full spectrum of undergraduate and graduate courses. The initial appointment is for 9.5 months, effective September 1, 2023.

Eligibility requires completion of the Ph.D. before September 30, 2023. Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a graduate school transcript, thesis abstract, statement of research plans and interests, statement of pedagogical experience and interests, and at least three, preferably four, letters of recommendation. At least one referee should address the applicant’s ability as a teacher and, if the applicant’s native language is not English, the applicant’s ability to use English in the classroom. At least two referees should write about the applicant’s research ability. The Department will give first consideration to applications completed by March 1, 2023 but will accept applications until available positions are filled.
