Position Description
In the Department of Mathematics and Natural Science at the Mathematics of Data Science Group at the Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau, Germany) is a vacancy for a postdoc (f/m/d) to promote their own academic qualifications within the meaning of Section 2 (1) of the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz) as soon as possible. Your tasks Your job tasks include: - You focus on advanced mathematical research and algorithmic development, contributing to the group’s work in areas such as data assimilation, machine learning, and causal inference, with applications in climate science and biomedical challenges. - You publish your findings in prestigious journals, including those in the SIAM series. - You contribute to teaching within the Institute of Mathematics, delivering approximately four semester hours per week. This includes teaching in the newly developed Bachelor's and Master's programs in Data Science as well as supporting the Data Science Lab, where you mentor PhD students. - You assist in supervising theses and actively engage in academic self-governance. - You present your research at national and international conferences, workshops, and meetings, and collaborate with international partners during short stays abroad (1–6 months). - You apply for and secure third-party funding to support your and the lab’s research activities. Your profile For being part of the selection process is needed: - A completed university degree and a PhD in mathematics, computer science with a mathematical focus, or a closely related field at the time of appointment. - Strong expertise in data assimilation, particularly in particle filtering, as well as in data science, machine learning, and statistics, evidenced by outstanding theses or successfully completed coursework in these areas. - Solid knowledge of the Mathematics of Data Science, relevant to both research and teaching. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. - Proficient programming skills, especially in Python and MATLAB Following competences are desirable: - A high level of commitment, enthusiasm, initiative, an independent working style, and strong teamwork abilities. - Teaching experience Please provide evidence of the qualifications required for the job by certificates and references. In principle, the job is also suitable for part-time employment. The extent to which a part-time request can be granted, in particular with regard to the location and scope of part-time work, will be examined on the basis of the needs of the service.
