Fellowship Description:

*** this fellowship has been closed, and no new applications will be accepted. ***

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral fellow in the area of mobile health (mHealth) as part of a research project led by Professors Susan Murphy and Ambuj Tewari. This interdisciplinary project aims to advance the state-of-the-art in designing, implementing, and analyzing data obtained from, JITAIs (Just-in-time Adaptive Interventions). JITAIs are real-time interventions delivered via mobile devices that address needs of particular individuals at particular moments in time. We envisage that the research in this project will be useful in a variety of domain applications including physical activity, smoking, alcohol abuse, mental health and chronic pain.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Statistics, or a related discipline. She or he will have prior background and strong motivation to work in one or more of the following areas: (i) designing bandit and reinforcement learning algorithms, (ii) implementing learning algorithms on mobile phones with due consideration of battery and performance issues, (iii) using learning algorithms with real data and/or (iv) designing machine learning based prediction algorithms from data collected using passive sensors. Prior work in the mHealth is not a requirement but will, of course, be desirable.

The annual salary will be in the $50K-$60K range (plus fringe benefits) and can be negotiated based on the strength of the candidate's record. The position will initially be for one year but may extend to two more years subject to annual progress evaluation. The University of Michigan is a leading research university known internationally for its vibrant community of scientists and scholars, including a strong contingent of machine learning researchers. The successful applicant will have ample opportunities for professional development through interactions with researchers in Computer Science, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, The Medical School and the School of Information. The city of Ann Arbor offers a culturally and intellectually rich experience to its residents, who have access to numerous restaurants, shops, museums, parks, and live events.

Review of applications begins now and will continue until the position is filled. We expect the candidate to start as soon as possible but no later than September 1, 2016.
