Position Description:    

The University of Ottawa invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Quantum information and tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The University of Ottawa, host of the Joint Max-Planck-uOttawa Centre for Extreme and Quantum Photonics, has acquired an international reputation in the fields of quantum information, quantum photonics, and quantum materials. Applicants with expertise on mathematical aspects of quantum information (including, but not limited to, Quantum Algorithms, Quantum Cryptography, Quantum Complexity and/or Quantum Information Theory) will be joining an internationally renowned group of dynamic researchers, and will contribute to the successes of the overall program. Candidates are expected to establish a strong, externally funded, and collaborative research program in Quantum Information.

The Faculty of Science is one of the most research intensive science faculties in Canada and is recognized for its world-class programs and infrastructure within its five departments in the following domains: Biology, Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, has ~ 40 faculty members. The Department is part of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, the Fields Institute and the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques. Notable to this position are possible collaborations via the uOttawa-Kanata North initiative, the Joint Centre for Extreme Photonics (JCEP), as well as the Max Planck - uOttawa Centre for extreme Quantum Photonics.

Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs are one of Canada’s premier early career recognition and recruitment programs, and are intended for exceptional emerging scholars acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. Tier 2 Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field. For each Tier 2 Chair, the institution receives $100,000 annually for five years, with an additional $20,000 annual research stipend for first-term Tier 2 Chairs.

Candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years after PhD at the time of nomination. Candidates should, at a minimum, be assistant or associate professors, or possess the necessary qualifications to be appointed to these levels. Candidates who are more than 10 years from their highest degree must contact the University of Ottawa directly for questions related to their potential eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair. The institution may nominate a professor or a researcher who is more than 10 years from their highest degree at the time of nomination and has experienced legitimate career interruptions (see acceptable justifications). In such cases, the institution must submit to the Secretariat a formal justification (using the Tier 2 Justification Screening Form), explaining why the nominee is still considered to be an emerging scholar. The University recognizes the legitimate impact that leaves (e.g., parental leave, leave due to illness) can have on a candidate’s record of research achievement and that these leaves will be taken into careful consideration during the assessment process. New CRC nominees are also eligible for infrastructure support from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) to help acquire state-of-the-art equipment essential to their work.

Required qualifications and work experience: PhD or equivalent in Mathematics, Computer Science, Mathematical Physics, or a related discipline; postdoctoral experience is desirable. A demonstrated excellent research track record in quantum information. A commitment to teaching and graduate training, a strong track record in and a commitment to interdisciplinary collaborations, and the ability to obtain external research funds. Excellent communication skills in either French or English. Passive knowledge of the other official language would be an asset.

Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Science, with a salary consistent with the collective agreement of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa.
