Position Description:

Postdoc position in random spatial networks and algorithms

Job description The Mathematical Institute at Utrecht University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to work with Dr Ivan Kryven in a project on random spatial networks and algorithms. The position has a fixed term of 1 year with a preferred starting date in October 2020.

You will conduct research in random graphs that are simultaneously defined by topological and metric constraints, as well as on new algorithms for construction of such graphs with an aim to inspire improvements in numerical methods for large scale molecular simulations. You will also contribute to the activities of the research group.

As the postdoctoral researcher you will be part of: • conducting research in the area of geometric random graphs and algorithms; • collaborating in the preparation of research publications; • contributing to the academic activities at the Mathematical Institute; • contributing to the supervision of doctoral students (if desired); • developing ideas for generating research income, for which support will be provided (if desired).

Qualifications Our ideal candidate:

• has or is close to completing, a PhD in applied mathematics or a related discipline, and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in stochastic analysis, statistical physics and/or continuous optimisation; • has prior experience at least in one of the following areas: random graphs, generative algorithms for networks, many-body dynamical systems, molecular simulations; • has previous experience of contributing to publications and possess excellent communication skills.

Offer • A position for 1 year doing full-time research; • the opportunity to gain research experience in a friendly and inspiring international environment; • the possibility to engage with leading researchers of the field as well as their collaborators; • a full-time gross salary ranging from € 2,790 to € 4,402 in scale 10; • benefits including 8% holiday bonus and 8.3% end-of-year bonus; • a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment conditions based on the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities.

In addition to the employment conditions laid down in the CAO for Dutch Universities, Utrecht University has a number of its own arrangements. For example, there are agreements on professional development, grant writing support, leave arrangements and sports. We also give you the opportunity to expand your terms of employment yourself via the Employment Conditions Selection Model. This is how we like to encourage you to continue to grow.

About the organisation Utrecht University’s Mathematical Institute external link(MI) is internationally recognised for its research in both pure and applied mathematics. In applied mathematics, we excel in research on dynamical systems, including differential equations, stochastic processes and computational mathematics, and in networks, including random graphs and statistical physics. The Mathematical Institute is an active force within the Centre on Complex Systems Studies and houses the Utrecht Geometry Centre.

The institute has a long-standing tradition of transdisciplinary collaboration with other scientific fields including, atmosphere/ocean sciences, computational life sciences, mathematical biology, medical and seismic imaging, materials science and theoretical physics. The MI regularly engages in funded research collaborations with industry, National Research Organisation (NWO) and government institutes.

The Institute currently comprises about 10 Full Professors, 20 further faculty members, 25 PhD candidates, 10 Postdocs, and teaches 500 students.

At the Faculty of Science external linkthere are 6 departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes which work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing problems. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects.

Utrecht University is a friendly and ambitious university at the heart of an ancient city. We love to welcome new scientists to our city – a thriving cultural hub that is consistently rated as one of the world’s happiest cities. We are renowned for our innovative interdisciplinary research and our emphasis on inspirational research and excellent education. We are equally well-known for our familiar atmosphere and the can-do mentality of our people. This lively and inspiring academic environment attracts professors, researchers and PhD candidates from all over the globe, making both the University and the Faculty of Science a wonderfully diverse and vibrant international community.
