Position Description:    

The Emmy Noether Research Group "Numerical and Probabilistic Nonlinear Algebra" of Paul Breiding (paulbreiding.org) has openings for

One PhD Student and one Postdoctoral Researcher

The group is based at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig, Germany. Salary is competitive based on experience and qualification and working conditions are excellent, with a dedicated and competent staff. Relevant initiatives (conferences, workshops, etc) can be funded.

The PhD candidate will work on the project "Sensitivity in Computer Vision". Applicants should be interested in and curious about working on an interdisciplinary research topic at the interface of numerical analysis, algebraic geometry, optimization and computer science. A background in one or several of those fields is beneficial but not mandatory.

The postdoctoral researcher will have both an independent research agenda and collaborate with other group members across disciplinary boundaries. Those disciplines include algebraic geometry, probability theory and numerical analysis.

About the location: MPI MiS is a center for applied mathematical research in Germany, with expertise in dynamical systems, PDEs, stochastic processes and non-linear algebra. The broader scientific environment in Leipzig includes two other Max Planck Institutes (Cognitive Science and Evolutionary Anthropology) as well as the University of Leipzig.

We offer:

  • Postdoctoral position for 1-3 year. / PhD position for 3 years.
  • No teaching duties, but the postsocs have the possibility to teach an advanced course in our international graduate school.
  • We provide a scientific environment where you are encouraged to explore new scientific directions and where you will find many partners with whom you can discuss a wide range of scientific ideas.
