Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Mathematics, Georgetown College, Georgetown, Kentucky

The Department of Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science at Georgetown College invites applications for a tenure-track professorship of Mathematics, pending final funding approval. The position would begin in August 2021. Rank is open: applicants at all levels of experience will be considered. A Ph.D. in Mathematics is required.

Georgetown College is a private liberal arts institution in Central Kentucky serving approximately 1070 undergraduate students. Growing undergraduate enrollment has generated need for the advertised position.

The Department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in mathematics and minors in computer science, mathematics, physics and data analysis. In addition, the Department hosts a 3-2 pre-Engineering transfer program, with which an Engineering Arts major is associated. Emphasis is placed on teaching excellence in the context of a church-related college; research and professional development are encouraged and supported. The teaching load is the equivalent of four three-hour courses per semester.

The successful candidate would join a team of two physicists and three mathematicians who value active learning in the classroom and the systematic development, both in class and in extracurricular activities, of communication and collaboration skills in addition to the critical thinking and problem-solving skills typically associated with the study of mathematics. We value—and have always enjoyed—strong collegiality both within the Department and across campus.

Students in our Department often participate in either the Science Honors Program, which funds a summer of undergraduate research, or in the Oxford Honors Program, under which our mathematics majors can spend one or two terms at Oxford University.

Scholarly interests among the current mathematicians include abstract algebra, mathematics education, undergraduate statistics education, mathematical modeling, data science and the history of mathematics. We welcome candidates from any mathematical specialty, with the understanding that long-term professional development encompasses the gradual broadening one’s teaching range; in particular the successful candidate is expected, after an appropriate period of preparation, to share in the teaching of a limited number of courses in elementary computer programming and data science, and to be able to guide students in computational work in advanced courses and in senior Honors projects.

Georgetown College does not discriminate, either in the admission of students, the hiring and promotion of employees, or in the administration of any of its educational policies, programs, or activities on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age or disability. We embrace diversity and inclusion, and warmly encourage women and individuals from under-represented groups to apply.

The College is a historically Baptist institution, and all full-time tenure-track faculty are expected to be Christian. In keeping, however, with Georgetown’s firm commitment to academic freedom, no creed or statement of faith is imposed upon employees, nor is any one theological orientation or expression of spirituality singled out for special favor.

Interested persons should submit a cover letter, vita, copies of transcripts, statement of teaching philosophy, and three letters of recommendation to provost@georgetowncollege.edu. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
