Assistant Professor Mathematics - Actuarial Science Emphasis

Summary:

The Department of Mathematics at Utah Valley University invites qualified individuals to apply for a tenure-track position as an assistant professor of mathematics - actuarial science emphasis, starting September 2020. Duties include teaching lower-and upper- division statistics courses as well as mathematics courses as required. The teaching assignment is 12 credit hours per semester. Applicants should have an engaging and effective teaching style, be fluent in the use of courseware and other technologies for face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online instruction, and should also pursue scholarly activities. Candidates must have a doctoral degree in actuarial science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field. ABD applicants will be considered, but must have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree by June 30, 2021. In addition to serving as the coordinator of the actuarial science program, the candidate will serve on other committees in the department and the university. The duties as actuarial coordinator will include teaching actuarial exam preparation courses, keeping curriculum up-to-date, and organizing campus events for actuarial science students such as guest speakers and job fairs.

The main campus of Utah Valley University is located in Orem, Utah. UVU is a rapidly growing institution which primarily emphasizes undergraduate education. Required Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a terminal degree (Ph. D.) in a related academic field of study plus one year of teaching experience. Must have experience assessing student learning capabilities and learning styles and understand how to develop curriculum of assigned courses.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of teaching through implementation of appropriate pedagogy, clear presentation and preparation. • Interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Demonstrates the skills to evaluate student performance. • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing and publish and/or present scholarly research. • Ability to use online learning tools and mechanisms. • Ability to develop, coordinate, manage, and foster teamwork among diverse education and training programs. • Ability to function effectively on a variety of committees and assignments that serve the needs of the University. • Ability to interact personally with students and other faculty members in a congenial and productive manner.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral Degree in Actuarial Science Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
