University of Wisconsin - Madison Department of Mathematics
Postdoctoral positions available: Mathematics and Data Science for Improved Physical Modeling and Prediction of Arctic Sea Ice, funded by Office of Naval Research (ONR) Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives (MURI) Program.
Successful applicants will work on projects, each one interrelated and collaborative, studying sea-ice processes incorporating a range of approaches as outlined below. Each position includes funding for the 9-month academic year plus two summer months for up to 3 years, depending on performance and subject to availability of funding. Applicants must hold (or expected to hold by the start date of their appointment) a PhD in Mathematics, Earth Sciences, including Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Cryospheric dynamics, or a related field, and must be within six years of receiving their degree. Appointments can start as early as August 23, 2021, and applications will be reviewed until the positions are filled.
The UW-Madison postdoctoral researchers will be supervised by Nan Chen and Sam Stechmann. They will work on multi-scale and stochastic modeling and simulation, for sea ice and coupled atmosphere-ocean-sea ice dynamics; and data assimilation, uncertainty quantification and prediction of sea ice and coupled atmosphere-sea ice models using stochastic tools for developing reduced-order models. Information about Chen's and Stechmann's current research, reprints and preprints is available at their faculty websites, https://www.math.wisc.edu/~chennan/, https://www.math.wisc.edu/~stechmann/ In addition to postdoctoral research, the successful candidates will be appointed as Van Vleck Postdoctoral Scholars and will be expected to teach 1-2 courses per academic year. Actual courses to be taught will be determined based on department need at time of hire. All application materials, including a completed AMS Standard Cover
Sheet, cover letter, a curriculum vitae which includes a publication
list, and brief descriptions of research and teaching, should be
uploaded to this site. Applicants should arrange to have three or more
letters of recommendation delivered through http://www.mathjobs.org. At
least one letter must discuss the applicant's teaching experiences and
capabilities. Other evidence of good teaching will also be helpful.
Deadline for Applications: December 4, 2020. Applications will continue to be considered until all available positions are filled.
