Applications are invited for a tenure-track position in mathematics at the assistant professor rank, to begin Fall 2021. This position requires candidates to have an interest in and ability to help develop and maintain a Data Science major/minor. Required qualifications include: a Ph.D. in mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics by 15 August 2021; college teaching experience; interest in and plans for pursuing collaborative research with undergraduate students, particularly in the area of data science; strong commitment to student-centered education that emphasizes critical and creative thinking; ability to relate well to colleagues, students, and staff in a small-college environment. Preference will be given to those with research expertise that complements current departmental expertise, to those who can teach a wide breadth of courses, and to those who have potential to collaborate with other departments to build an interdisciplinary Data Science major. Duties include teaching at all levels of undergraduate mathematics including quantitative reasoning courses for non-majors and courses in the data science program; assisting with the development of a data science major; advising students; service on college and/or university committees; and maintaining an appropriate level of professional activity. The Mathematics Department currently offers a Mathematics Major and Mathematics Major—Data Science Track, as well as minors in Mathematics and Data Science. Each year the department graduates approximately 15 majors and 15—20 minors. As a significant number of math majors are dual majors, applicants with an interest and ability to mentor students in interdisciplinary undergraduate research projects will be viewed favorably. While the department serves an important role in support of other disciplines, especially in the natural sciences, computer science, economics and finance, it also maintains an active program of preparing students for graduate study in mathematics, careers in teaching, and non-academic careers such as those in the actuarial sciences.
