Overview

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University invites applications for two 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Mathematical Biology with an estimated starting date of August 1, 2021. One of the positions is intended for a probabilist working in biological, ecological, or environmental applications, while the other is open to candidates applying more general computational or analytic techniques to problems in the life sciences. We seek individuals that complement and enhance the current strengths of our Mathematical Biology group (http://math.usu.edu/research/) and focus on establishing interdisciplinary collaboration with environmental and life scientists.

The Mathematical Biology group specializes in data-driven, computational, multi-disciplinary research using mathematical tools to investigate current questions in living systems.  The group maintains active collaborations in biology, ecology, engineering, and natural resources, and students have numerous opportunities to apply mathematics in the context of important biological, environmental, and ecological challenges. We have interest in candidates focusing on data-driven mathematical modeling, uncertainty quantification, or with expertise in stochastic modeling, analysis, and simulation of problems in connection to applications in Biology.

Responsibilities

Duties include establishing a strong, independent research program in mathematical biology, actively participating in the Mathematical Biology group, collaborating more generally with quantitative bioscientists, teaching applied mathematics and/or probability at the undergraduate and graduate level, and mentoring research students.  Depending on their background, the faculty members hired are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in pure and applied mathematics, including numerical methods, nonlinear dynamics, partial differential equations, asymptotic analysis, and applied math methods. The applied probabilist will be expected to teach courses in probability theory and stochastic processes.

Utah State University has a great environment for interdisciplinary research, with a history of innovative interdisciplinary education and grantsmanship. Applicants from groups underrepresented in Mathematics and Statistics are particularly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Mathematical Biology, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated excellence and promise in both research and teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral research experience
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with biological and environmental scientists.
  • Potential to contribute to development of the Mathematical Biology group and to collaborate successfully with USU’s quantitative biology/ecology community.
  • Documented capacity to increase the Department’s diversity profile, directly or indirectly.

Required Documents

  •  Cover letter. Applicants in applied probability should indicate this clearly.
  •  Curriculum vitae.
  •  Statement of research interests. Please describe how your research fits into current USU research trends  and address potential for collaboration with USU faculty members.
